ABOUT US

Who we are:

MORE ACTION for Disability Inclusion(MADI), Inc is a humanitarian  nonprofit organization founded in April 2014, and incorporated  in the DMV( Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia) area within the meaning of Section 501(c) 3  of the Internal Revenue Code, committed to:

-promoting, supporting and advocating for the complete inclusion of persons with physical, intellectual, developmental and sensory disabilities in the development processes of their respective communities;

-alleviating the sufferings of persons with disabilities during and after humanitarian emergencies by ensuring their protection and  safety.

The World Report on Disability published by the World Bank and the World Health Organization(WHO) in 2011 estimates that over 1 billion people, that is about 15.6% of the world’s population have a disability.

It should be recalled that:

-80% of these persons with disabilities live in Low and Middle income countries;

-the disability prevalence rate among female is 19.2% whereas it is 12% for men;

-20% of people living in poverty in Low and Middle Income countries have a disability.

This requires urgent attention!

What we do:

At MORE ACTION, our work is grounded on the basic principle that GOD loves and cares for ALL human beings unconditionally, irrespective of their real or imagined abilities or disabilities. Empowering persons with disabilities begins by acknowledging that society is made up of persons who have a wide range of abilities.

For a long time now, persons with physical, developmental, intellectual, and sensory impairments  have been discriminated and permanently excluded from the development efforts and processes of their respective communities.

It is against this backdrop that MORE ACTION  was founded in an effort to redress this omission by promoting and advocating for  more disability-inclusive development approach and practices in our communities that will help restore hope, dignity and respect for persons with disabilities in order for them to achieve their full potentials in an equitable and disability-friendly society.

At  MORE ACTION we therefore seek to specifically  provide responses to :

– the lower education achievements of persons with disabilities, especially children by promoting  and fostering Inclusive Education, whereby children with disabilities are enrolled in their regular neighborhood school system;

– the poor healthcare of persons with disabilities by ensuring that they live healthy lives through proper hygiene, and sanitation and having access to clean water(WASH) and good nutrition in their communities;

-the limited employment and  economic opportunities, and the higher rates of poverty experienced by persons with disabilities by promoting income generating activities, and inclusive vocational training in Low Income Communities so that they can have decent job opportunities that inspire hope and restore their dignity and respect in their communities.

-the constant exclusion of persons with disabilities from humanitarian response programs by promoting an inclusive practice in project design and service delivery before, during and in the aftermath of disasters.

AT MORE ACTION, we also seek to foster research on barriers and other issues hampering disability inclusion by offering opportunities to volunteers and interns.

Our Mission:

To enhance the complete inclusion of  ALL persons with disabilities, in the development processes of their communities by providing life-changing services that inspire hope, dignity and respect.

Our Vision:

Reconstructing Inclusive Communities wherein ALL persons with disabilities are welcomed, and are able to live independently with hope, dignity and respect.

Our Values and Principles:

At MORE ACTION, our work is inspired by GOD’s unconditional love for ALL humans, the principles of humanity, impartiality, empathy, diversity, human rights, inclusion, equality and  the respect for the infinite worth and dignity of ALL persons regardless of their abilities and inabilities.

Our Goal:

At MORE ACTION, our major goal is to contribute in the  promotion of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which recognizes in its preamble that “eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development”.

 At MORE ACTION, we therefore address disability as both a cause and consequence of poverty. There exist a very strong relationship between disability and poverty. In fact, disability and poverty form a vicious cycle.

General Objectives:

MORE ACTION was formed for the following  purposes;

  • to promote all the  rights enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities(UNCRPD) of 2006;
  • to advocate for and raise awareness on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 and foster its implementation and achievement especially in the area of disability inclusion(“living no one behind”);
  • to raise awareness on the educational rights of Children With Disabilities and to promote Inclusive Education by fostering the inclusion of children with disabilities in the regular or mainstream school system in their communities;
  • to promote humanitarian Long-Term Services and Supports(HLTSS) to persons with disabilities trapped into conflict and natural disasters;
  • to foster collaboration, partnership and maintain a cordial relationship among all stakeholders, Disabled Persons Organizations(DPOs) and Community Based Organizations(CBOs) working to promote disability inclusion.

What defines Us:

At MORE ACTION:

-we strive to implement the core principle of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development  which is “leaving no one behind” to ensure that our communities become a place where persons with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else;

-we strive to make a difference by adopting a distinctive  approach in promoting the socio-cultural and economic inclusion of persons with disabilities in their respective communities by providing life changing services that inspire hope, dignity and respect;

-we believe that persons with disabilities are also entitled to the same rights, privileges and opportunities as their non-disabled peers;

– we see all persons with physical, intellectual, developmental and sensory impairments as GOD’s own creature endowed with God-given potentials, very unique gifts and special talents that can be developed if the society changes its perceptions and attitudes towards them;

-we envision a community where ALL children(disabled or non-disabled) should be expected to attend their neighborhood schools, learn from the same curriculum, create friendship and become full members of their communities;

– we combine and coordinate as many services as needed, ranging from inclusive education and vocational training, health care, employment, housing to humanitarian or emergency response services to meet the growing needs of persons with disabilities;

-We provide Long-Term Community Support(LTCS) to help persons with disabilities achieve their full potential and goal;

– we do not assume that we know all the needs, aspirations or desires of persons we serve.

-We don’t make choices for them because we strongly uphold the concept of  “My Life, My Choices” and the concept of “Nothing About Us, Without Us” by supporting and encouraging each of the persons we serve to be engaged in the decision making processes that affects his or her life and choosing what is best for him or her.By so doing, we encourage them to guide us in helping them reach their goal and aspirations.

Diversity:

At MORE ACTION, we seek diversity in our staff, in our programs, in our volunteers and as well as in the people we serve.

Strategic Imperatives:

At MORE ACTION, our projects and outcome goals evolve around  women, children,  boys, girls, men, older adults, refugees and IDPs with disabilities.
